A True Home Exchange Devotee Leaves Us

Home Exchange Blog
GrandadI was so sorry last week to hear of the passing of one of our most devoted members. John P first joined ExchangeHomes.com in 1990 after he was widowed and was seeking a means of visiting his three adult children without being a burden upon them. He lived in Macon, Georgia, while his two sons lived in Miami, Floria and Boston, Massachusetts and his daughter lived in San Diego, California.

Each year he visited all three, alternating a month long major home swaps with two much shorter ones. He quickly established several regular exchange partners in all three locations, especially for the shorter swaps. Everyone he swapped with had very positive feelings about him and were touched by the little gifts he used to leave behind for them.

In the early years he had a King Charles spaniel who always used to travel with him, but she was elderly and died around 1995.

I heard of John’s passing from his daughter. Apparently he died in March of this year and she was reminded of us while going through his belongings. She knew how much home exchanging had brightened her father’s life since her mother’s death and she felt it was important to contact me with the end of the story.

We talked for a long time. She told me that at the time of his death, John had been arranging a swap with a family in Boston, and rather than let them down, she and her brothers were keeping their father’s house until the end of June so that that the Boston family could stay in it. What amazingly kind and thoughtful people!
