Accessible Home Exchange Traveling

Home Exchange Blog
ExchangeHomes.com has always been an advocate of promoting home exchange as a great way for people with disabilities to travel. Over the years we’ve listed homes with major accessible features such as wide doors, ramps, handrails, accessible cabinetry layouts, shallow-depth refrigerators, curb-free roll-in showers, adjustable beds, and lifts and transfer devices. This type of home usually includes numerous smaller items such as phone handles, one handed cutting-boards, jar openers, pot tippers, etc., etc. to name just a few.

We’ve had less mobile members with all sorts of disabilities and accessibility problems and most of them have managed to locate home exchanges with people in similar circumstances to themselves. Usually they tend not to travel as far as our more able bodied members, but one man from New Zealand with quite severe disabilities managed to vacation with his sister in Australia and Japan.

Many disabled members have pets which they leave in their home for their exchange partners to enjoy and this sharing experience often proves to be an enormous enhancement to both parties.

Another great feature is that disabled members very often have wheelchair adapted vehicles which also become part of their exchanges. I’ve also heard of members traveling with their regular wheelchairs and leaving behind their more high-tech motorized versions. A particularly good arrangement.

Travel is an accepted part of modern life; everyone looks forward to their summer vacation and it’s great to know that ExchangeHomes.com is able to make such experiences possible for our less mobile members. Swapping homes with other persons with similar needs, in other parts of the world, is a low-cost and practical alternative. I strongly suggest you allow plenty of time to establish in advance exactly what accessible features the vacation home has. Never be afraid to ask your potential swap partner lots of relevant questions.

My father is handicapped and he and my mother have done several exchanges. He loves this method of travel and they’ve always become friends with their exchange partners. Keep up the good work!
